It’s easy to understand why major smartphone manufacturers and app developers are strengthening their pushes into India lately. We are, after all, now the second largest smartphone market in the world.
We achieved that title just last month, after India overtook the US, falling in behind with 40 million smartphones in the third quarter. Now, CyberMedia Research says mobile handset shipments in India are likely to touch 262 million units by the end of 2017.
Of that number, feature phones will actually dominate with a 141.6 million share, while smartphones will account for 124 million units. So far this year, vendors have shipped around 200 million devices to India, with the third quarter’s numbers being up 29 percent from last year.
“While Q4 will see the introduction of several marquee flagship brands, the India market will continue to be driven by the affordable (under Rs 7,000) and value for money (Rs 7,000-25,000) segments,” CMR’s report said.
