5 Ways The iPhone X Is Better Than The Pixel 2

Every smartphone brand wants to compete with Apple and Google is no exception as the company launched the second generation of the Pixel, a few weeks ago. We found the Pixel 2 to be a better phone than the iPhone 8, however, since Apple has come out with their most powerful device yet, things have definitely changed.

The Pixel 2 XL is almost the same size as the iPhone X, however, Google has not skimped on certain features for the larger, more expensive phone. Having said that, the iPhone X packs a mean punch in terms of performance and design and the time has finally come to compare the two flagship devices. Both smartphones feature similar specs such as an OLED screen, better cameras and refined designed language, but which one is better? Let’s find out.

Design

When it comes to design, smartphones have to be eye-catching and turn heads so that it can be spotted from far away. The iPhone X has a notch that interferes with the viewing experience while the Pixel 2 XL has minimal bezels. The Pixel 2 XL may have a design that is similar to other bezel-less smartphones, but it still does not match up to the iPhone X. The design doesn’t look too inspiring or refreshing when compared to the iPhone X.

The iPhone X has a glass back that allows wireless charging. What makes people look at the device with awe is the shiny stainless-steel frame. The frame definitely has an advantage over Pixel 2’s aluminium design. The iPhone measures 5.7 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches and is smaller and easier to hold than the 6-inch design of the Pixel 2 XL (6.2 x 3 x 0.3 inches).

Display

Apple has finally included an OLED display on an iPhone and the race for the best display on a smartphone is on. There are plenty of smartphones that utilise an OLED panel but the iPhone X’s screen was recently rated to be the best in the market.

The iPhone X display has a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels while the Pixel 2 XL hosts a larger screen with a resolution of 2880 x 1440. However, when it comes to comparing displays, it’s not only about the resolution when it comes to determining the quality, even though the Pixel 2 XL has an advantage over the iPhone X.

The Pixel 2 XL has faced major issues when it comes to quality. The colour balance has been off and there were many reports of burn-ins. Even though Google may have fixed the issue with a software update, it still does not match up to the iPhone X.

The iPhone X has a much brighter screen with an emitting score of 574 nits while the Pixel 2 is far behind with 438 nits. Having a brighter display is also advantageous since the iPhone X can achieve wider viewing angles.

Performance: Pixel 2 is nowhere close

Tom’s Guide conducted a performance test with the two smartphones and the results speak for themselves. When it comes to performance, the iPhone X is probably the most powerful and efficient smartphone in the world and it’s mostly because of the A11 Bionic chip. No matter what smartphone companies and SoC manufacturers say, the A11 chip puts the Snapdragon 835 to shame. Tom’s Guide concluded, “It took the iPhone 42 seconds to transcode a 2-minute 4K video in the Adobe Clips app, while the Pixel 2 took a whopping 2 minutes and 55 seconds. The iPhone X’s Geekbench 4 general-performance test score of 10,357 is also a massive win, towering over the 6,282 of the Pixel 2.”

Most smartphones use some form of biometric security these days, however, the Pixel 2 is still using the traditional fingerprint sensor. The iPhone X has a significant advantage over the Pixel 2 in this category with the introduction of Face ID.

During the course of our review, Face ID performed well in almost every scenario (even in low-light) and makes it easier for the user to access the smartphone. You can access the smartphone by simply swiping up which is more convenient than using a fingerprint sensor. Pixel 2’s fingerprint sensor is very accurate and fast, but it is an additional step to unlock a smartphone. Fingerprint sensors also tend to not work properly if you have moisture or sweat on your fingertips and that can get annoying, real fast.

When I first saw Animojis at Apple’s keynote presentation, I immediately dismissed it as a gimmick—until I got to play with it. The Animoji is probably the most exciting and fun thing to do on the iPhone X as it uses your expressions to bring digital characters to life. It even records the audio of what you are saying in order to add more context to your message.

The iPhone X also features Qi-based wireless charging which is completely absent on the Pixel 2. Qi wireless charging technology is convenient and more accessible. This comes in handy when you are trying to listen to music and want to charge the phone at the same time. The Pixel 2 has also removed the headphone jack but it does not offer the convenience of wireless charging.
