MediaTek enters partnership with Google to support Android Oreo Go

MediaTek, the world’s second largest producer of SoC
(System-on-Chip) solutions for smartphones, today announced a new partnership
with Google. Under this partnership, MediaTek is officially supporting Android
Oreo (Go edition)
– the new software experience unveiled by Google this week,
and tailored at affordable, entry-level mobile devices that feature 1 GB (or
less) of RAM.

MediaTek has worked with Google to optimize some of its chipsets
for Android Oreo Go, thus enabling phone manufacturers to easily offer a
high-quality Android experience on inexpensive, yet secure devices. A few of
MediaTek’s chipsets that are ready for Android Oreo Go include the entry-level MT6739,
MT6737, and MT6580 – all these feature quad-core processors, and can be seen as
alternatives to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 2xx series.

According to MediaTek, the first Android Oreo (Go edition)
smartphones powered by its chipsets will be released around the world starting the
first quarter of 2018. Most of these handsets will be available in markets like
India, South East Asia, the
Middle East & Africa, and Latin America.

Earlier today, Qualcomm also pledged support for Android
Oreo Go
. With both Qualcomm and MediaTek as partners, Google will certainly be
able to put Android Oreo Go on a lot of entry-level smartphones come next year. And
that’s certainly good news for users who rely on cheap phones because they simply can’t afford more expensive models.
