Back in 1983, against lack of expectations in a country that was still finding its feet in international cricket, Kapil Dev created history when he led India to its maiden World Cup title. For those who witnessed the events unfold at the Lord’s ground back then, the moment was truly iconic which was then passed on to the younger generation with tales of the team’s success against marauding West Indies.
While people like me – who weren’t even born at that time – have only relived those golden memories through rare videos, with only our imagination to ascertain what it must have felt like. But, in 2011, when MS Dhoni guided new-age Team India to their second World Cup title, we finally had some first-hand experience of the country’s mega success in international cricket.
Both Kapil and Dhoni achieved the feat in contrasting times and with different set of players, but what unites these two individuals is the fact that both of these guys are the only World Cup-winning captains in the history of Indian cricket. Though we can only imagine how these two icons would have fared while playing together, the rare moment recently became a reality when Dhoni and Kapil locked horns at the Eden Gardens.
The two cricket legends were brought together for a commercial shoot where they were seen taking on each other dressed in all whites. Both, Dhoni and Kapil bowled and batted against each other, toiling in the oppressive heat through the day for the shoot which was organised by another legendary Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.
Taking his run-up after all these years, Kapil bowled against Dhoni who replied back with some dashing strokes. After the bowling session, Kapil padded up as wicket-keeper batsman Dhoni bowled to the former Indian cricketer. While they were engrossed with friendly competition, a group of children and teenagers applauded the duo as part of the shoot which would finally take the shape of a 30-second advertisement.
Even if it was for a commercial, two legends of the game playing together was a dream come true for Indian cricket fans who wouldn’t have ever imagined of witnessing something as iconic as what took place at the hallowed Eden Gardens.
