Whenever a smartphone company claims that their smartphones have the best camera, I usually roll my eyes as we all know most of these claims are baseless. However, the DxOMark score doesn’t lie and according to them, the Pixel 2 has the best smartphone camera, ever.
Photography is a tricky thing when it comes to smartphones as tastes can vary, be subjective and also has different criteria to uphold. Pixel 2 seems to be hitting the spot in all aspects of mobile photography. Google released dozens of full-size, unedited images to prove that their smartphone has the best camera.
By default, the Google Pixel camera can take incredible pictures in low-light and also tackle high contrast scenes effectively. The Pixel can also take great HDR images and the Pixel 2 looks to improve that feature by capturing ample shadow detail. Unlike other smartphones that manipulate and heavily process images after a shot is taken, the Pixel 2’s HDR mode looks a bit more “natural”.
Traditionally, the portrait mode on smartphones could only be accomplished by a dual-camera setup however the Pixel 2 managed to achieve the same output with a single lens. Google also claims that their portrait mode can also capture objects with the same finesse or better than a traditional dual-camera smartphone. Here are few sample images to have a better look at the Pixel 2’s capabilities.
From what we can gather, the details are clear and digital noise is almost negligible even in lower lighting. However, the most impressive feat is the fact that the Pixel 2 can take bokeh shots with a single lens and Google’s software power. The Pixel 2 scored a 98 on the DxOMark which is higher than the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8. The results from these images are almost perfect and you can check out the entire gallery here.
