Back in its glory days in the 90s, the small medieval town in Puglia had over 8,000 residents, but sadly now only 2,700 are remaining. So, mayor Nicola Gatta has found creative ways to incite people in moving there. He’s offering 2,000 euros, or about ₹1.5 lakh, to encourage people to relocate and restore the town’s former grandeur.

While talking to CNN Travel, he said, “I work each day with passion and commitment to bring Candela back to its ancient splendour. Up until the 1960s, travelers called it ‘Nap’licchie’ (Little Naples), for it streets full of wayfarers, tourists, merchants and screaming vendors.”

Since the town’s economy was in trouble, a lot of younger residents decided to leave in search of work.

Stefano Bascianelli, the mayor’s right-hand man, explained the whole thing and how it works. While 800 euros would be offered to a single person who willing to move to Candela, couples can get around 1,200 euros, and 1,500 to 1,800 euros for three-member families, and over 2,000 euros for families of four to five people. But, there are some requirements, for obvious reasons; to qualify for this cash incentive, one must movie to Candela and rent a house, and along with that, have a job with a salary of at least 7,500 euros per year.

“We don’t want people flocking here thinking they get to live off the town hall’s revenues, all new residents must work and have an income,” says Bascianelli.

Honestly, that still a good deal, though, especially considering Six families from northern Italy have already settled in, and there are five more who have reportedly applied.
