Why Being A Man Is ‘Different’ In The 21st Century

Today is a special day for men from all over the world. It’s the one day we get to celebrate the fact that we were born with a Y gonosome. Yeah, it’s International Men’s Day.

But, to say that International Men’s Day is the same today as it was back in 1992 when it was inaugurated by Thomas Oaster, would be inaccurate at best.

Let me try and explain with a simple example: ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ was a Quentin Tarantino movie from 1996 with George Clooney in the lead. ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ is also a television show which premiered in 2014 and is still running. Yes, one’s for Hollywood and one’s for television, but if you compare the content of both shows, you’ll realise just how much the world has changed.

Something as simple as Tom & Jerry, a cartoon which we grew up on, has removed all signs of violence. Even the WWE, remember the 90s when everyone was going crazy? The PG era just wasn’t the same!

The million dollar question here is: WHY? It’s all because of one simple word–inclusion.

Don’t get me wrong here, inclusion is not a bad thing. In fact, it is something that’s required as the internet makes the world appear a lot smaller than it actually is. Whether we’re online or out and about, it’s important not to feel left out in any way, shape or form. But, and this is a big but, what does inclusion really mean? Now, that’s a tough question to answer! But, I’m going to try to answer anyway. (Don’t get offended!)

When you say inclusion, you automatically think it’s all about men vs women. But it’s not. It’s about including everyone irrespective of gender, race, age or special needs. It’s about much more than whether you’re a man or not. It’s about everyone being allowed to take part in anything. We are all equal. In every way!

Now that I’ve got that out of the way, let me tell you how being a man has changed in the 21st century:

Men Can Love Chick Flicks Too

If I told you I haven’t watched ‘Mean Girls’ at least 5 times, I’d be lying. Yeah, I’m not afraid to admit it. I’d do so in public too. Does this mean I don’t enjoy watching zombie movies? Of course not. Whether I’m in it for Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, the story or just for the heck of it, I won’t know and neither will you. If I get a chance to watch it again, would I? Hell, yeah!

Sexual Preference Is No Longer A Secret

I’m going to keep this one simple. The number of celebrities around the world who are open about their sexual preferences is significantly higher today than it was a few decades ago. The latest example of a good-looking male actor revealing themselves as queer that I can think of is Ezra Miller, The Flash.

‘House Husbands’ Is Now A Recognised Term

It’s no longer shameful to stay at home and take care of everything while the partner goes out and earns an honest day’s pay. It doesn’t really matter whether you’re a man and a woman, two men or two women. The most important thing is that you focus on your family. That’s all that matters.

We Are All A Part Of The #NEWHOOD

Finally, here are some of the lines used to describe a man as part of MensXP’s Newhood:

He is the one who cares.

The one who feels and the one who shares.

The one at the top and the one who is not.

The one who pulls the chair and the one with long hair.

The one who loves his drink and the one who wears pink.

The one who’s a sports fanatic and the one who is a die-hard romantic.

The one from a brute sect and the one who gives respect.

This is who all of us are! We’re all the NEWHOOD. Have a great year ahead!
