You spend most of your waking hours at work and so, it’s important to know that you are in the right job. Being stuck in a role that doesn’t suit your capabilities might leave you feeling unfulfilled. However, at times, you may not see the obvious – that you have landed a great job and that your contributions are making a difference.
Here are a few subtle signs that can help you realise you are in the right job.
1. You challenge yourself
You break your comfort zone every day to take on risks that you otherwise wouldn’t if you were stuck in a wrong job. You work at an organisation that recognises your work, and doesn’t punish you for every little mistake you make. It’s a sign that you work in an ideal environment that is conducive for your growth and development.
2. Your boss pushes you
There’s a difference between nice bosses and good bosses. Nice bosses can be extra sweet but they may avoid conflicts instead of resolving them. Good bosses, on the other hand, will offer their support whenever you need it. He/she will push your limits because they know what challenges will help you grow. Good bosses will always strike a balance.
3. Your colleagues are your friends
When you bond with the people you work with at work, you push each other to give your best. Your friendship works in your favour because you are a team. You challenge each other as much you challenge yourself. That is a sure shot sign that you have landed in the right place.
4. Your organisation does well
This is an external factor, but it helps you internalise your own accomplishments. Ask yourself this – would you rather be at a place that’s dying a slow death even if you love your job? It’s important to be a part of a workplace that’s on the map. Because your contributions, however big or small, have aided your organisation’s success.
5. Money is never an issue
You will never find money to be a problem if you are in the right job. You should never settle for a pay that’s “fair”; however, when you feel like your compensation accurately reflects your value, know that you are at the right workplace.
6. You envy your boss’s job
Don’t admonish yourself for envying your boss’s job. It is called professional envy and it means that you see yourself well-suited for a role higher up the ladder. It’s not necessarily a bad sign – unless you are being unscrupulous about how to get it.
7. You keep a track of your performance
Reviewing your work is great as it helps you list important things to improve your performance. You list things such as what you did, what the outcome was, how you reacted, and your satisfaction level. This habit helps you present your case to your boss at the time of promotions and appraisals.
8. You contribute to your boss’s success
When your professional responsibilities help advance your boss’s success, then you are in the right job. Your game is in on point when your achievements directly lead to praises from your boss and are reflective of how he builds his team.
9. You keep your promises
In other words, you meet deadlines. You leave no space between your commitment and delivery. You set a good example for your team because when you demonstrate responsible behaviour, others strive to improve theirs.
10. You make time for family and friends
Your job allows you to make time for family and friends. You know you have struck a healthy work-life balance. Your job doesn’t wreck your personal relationships and that is an amazing thing to have.
11. You love your weekends
When you end a workweek on a high note, you usher in your weekend with a smile. You enjoy your time off because you have worked hard to earn it. And you don’t feel any dread on Sunday evenings because you are excited to go back to work the next day.
12. You are positive on Mondays
If you are that annoying little bird that chirps his/her way to the desk, you definitely love Mondays! Others might hate you for it, but you don’t care. You are happy and positive because you love your job.
13. You don’t need coffee every morning
You are happy and you know it. You no longer feel the urge to gulp down 10 cups of caffeine to stay awake. Your energy comes from being excited for all the good work you will do today.
These are some clear signs that you are excelling at work. How many did you get right?
