How To Save Battery Life On iOS 11: 6 Important Tips

We’ve been testing the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus for almost two weeks and we hardly have any complaints regarding battery life on the two devices. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus comes with iOS 11 out of the box; however, iPhone 7 and below users have been complaining about battery drain ever since the new OS became available.

Apple released iOS 11.0.1 recently to curb the problem and some users reported that it appears to have fixed their battery problems, but if you are still experiencing battery life issues, here are a few steps you can take to make your iPhone last an entire day.

Identify Apps That Use Most Of The Power

iOS 11 can tell you which app has been hogging the most amount of battery life. A few apps such as “Home & Lock Screen” are unavoidable, however, there are plenty of third-party apps that are the most battery-intensive. Head on over to Settings > Battery to identify these apps and can help you decide which apps you need to remove.

Switch Off Background App Refresh

Apps use cellular data in the background to keep refreshing content which in turn effects your battery life, even when you are not using your iPhone. Sometimes it is useful to have this feature on for certain apps; however, you may not want this to function for shopping apps, games and even social media apps. To change this setting, go to Settings > General> Background App Refresh, then deselect apps that you do not want to update in the background.

Turn Off Raise To Wake

iPhones now have the ability to automatically switch on the display when picked up. I often do this several times a day even though I do not end up using my phone. The backlight is one of the biggest reasons why the battery drains faster than usual and you should turn it off right away. You should also reduce the auto-lock limit to the minimum as it will reduce the total display on time and effectively increase battery life.

Turn off Raise to Wake by going to Settings > Display & Brightness and set Raise to Wake to off.

Turn Off Location Based Services

Location services use GPS to make your iPhone aware of your surroundings and even though it comes handy while using Maps,  There are plenty of third-party apps that use your location to display ads and suggest new restaurants in the area. We suggest you switch to this service only for specific apps such as Google Maps and Apple Maps for traffic data updates. In addition, we also recommend you to turn on the “While Using” feature for specific apps as it will only use Location services when you use the app in real time. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. When On, scroll down to System Services, then uncheck all of these items. When you’re not using Location Services, such as GPS, simply turn it Off.

Control Center Does Not Turn off Wireless Radios

You might be used to switching off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radio signals from the Control Center. However, in iOS 11 the shortcuts do not entirely switch off the feature as it merely only disconnects you from the network. This is because Apple wants accessories such as the Apple Watch and Apple Pencil to remain connected and leaving the radios on would solve that problem. If you want to conserve battery, you will need to manually turn it off from the General menu.

Don’t Check Your Device Often

It may come across as very cynical when we say this, but you need to spend some time away from your phone. We often check our phones even when there is nothing really interesting happening on the internet. You might be tempted to check your phone for messages, missed calls or stalk your ex-girlfriend/boyfriend every few minutes, but constant use is one of the biggest causes for battery drain. Every time you lock your screen or unlock it every few minutes, you will drain battery life.
