This eyebrow-controlled iPhone X game will give you wrinkles

An intriguing Phone X game has recently appeared on Apple’s App Store. The title, dubbed Rainbrow, is rather straightforward – the player is tasked with moving an emoji up and down the screen to collect stars while dodging enemies such as cars, ghosts, and ducks.

What’s interesting about this game; however, is the way the user controls the emoji character. Rainbrow is played with facial expressions rather than touch input. In order to move the emoji up, you have to raise your eyebrows. To go down, simply frown. If you want to stay in the same row, maintain a neutral facial expression.

Now, we all know that a picture video is worth a thousand words, so feel free to watch the YouTube clip below in order to get a better grasp on the movement controls in Rainbrow.

This is a typical “high score game”, where your goal is to beat your previous achievements. The longer you last, the more obstacles begin to appear. There aren’t any online leaderboards at the moment, but game creator Nathan Gitter says that a multiplayer mode will be added through integration with Apple’s Game Center in a future update.

Rainbrow is an example of how developers can use the facial tracking capabilities of Apple’s ARKit framework in combination with the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone X to create new ways of playing games. Gitter says he believes that there’s a lot of potential for face-based apps, given the fact that such applications can improve accessibility.

If you’d like to give Rainbrow a try, feel free to follow the below link to the App Store. Keep in mind that the game only works with the iPhone X. Rainbrow is free and doesn’t feature any ads, but in-app purchases for new emoji characters may be added at a later point.

Before we wrap things up, we feel obliged to say that playing this game too often won’t be good for your face. Excessive frowning and eyebrow-raising can lead to wrinkles appearing faster on your forehead. Stay beautiful, little charmers!
